Steven Alan kicked off NYFW with a dynamic and well received presentation.  The designer revealed earlier that his inspiration was Mexico in the 40′s, an influence that came through in plenty of bold textures, highly pigmented reds, shadowy grays, and blanket patterns. In true Steven Alan style, the women’s garments were heavily menswear influenced and balanced with feminine details, including a delicate folk-inspired floral shift. Leading the women’s looks, however, were praire inspired skirts, high-waisted and belted. The men’s side of the collection was an exercise in blending comfort and slim tailoring - paradoxical, yet quite successful.  Of note was a textured 2-on-1 button suit and a cameo for ‘Dad’ New Balances. Over all, the collection looked as if Alan painted his signature American silhouettes with the colors and patterns from our warmer neighbor to the south – and did it beautifully, with a deft and subtle hand.  The show started at 9 AM and the crowd left an hour later, wide-eyed and in good spirits – a pitch perfect way to start the week. – M
